Valentine’s day - yay or nay?

So I’m curious about the general opinion (aka, the opinion of the three people who visit this site … oh wait, I already know two of them …) about Valentine’s Day.

Mine? Sentiment is meaningless when it’s forced. It means nothing that someone buys you a sappy card or stale chocolates or overpriced flowers because Hallmark says they have to. So why do it?

That said, there is a caveat to my opinion. For those deadbeat husbands/wives/girlfriends/boyfriends/etc who never do anything nice for their significant other, I can understand why said significant other would be into Valentine’s Day - if only to have one nice thing done for them all year.

So I guess Valentine’s Day is like detention. You should only have to suffer through it if you’ve done bad. If you do good the rest of the year, you get to go home early.

Let the completely unrelated conversations begin!

  1.

I seem to spend my valentines days with affianced or otherwise taken ladies. so for me, well it’s not really any kind of an issue to think about right now… hehe

That being said, i’m much more of a fan of spontaneous romantic gestures than pre-meditated dates where it is ‘expected’…

I find that people find happiness more easily in small unexpected acts whereas the whole valentines day thing, well that sets a level of expectation of what it should be, and so despite the gesture being nice, it may not match that expectation and so actually lead to disappointment…

  2.

Valentine’s and New Year’s - same thing! You expect too much. And then end up disappointed. Excellent point, I’ll add it to my Boycott Valentine’s day petition :-)

  3.

Exactly the same for new years… give me a night in with friends, alcohol, music etc and i’m happy! :-)

  4.

Oh my god how English am I?! I’m drinking tea and eating a crumpet. Mmmmm crumpety goodness.

  5.

Heh, I think it’s just your subconscious telling you how much you miss me… you know i normally live in england, and so you’re trying to be more english to feel closer to me. :-D

  6.

Yes. You’re the poster boy for England (especially when you open your mouth.) They should totally put you on the money instead of that old chick.

  7.

Yeah they should, and then i can charge them a fee for image rights and live the life of a king!! Good idea shellie… now, how to go about getting this implemented… hmm…

  8.

I agree with you both on this one. Enforced niceness isn’t nice. It’s fake. I don’t agrew with your caveat though Michele, I think if you’re a crappy significant other for 364 days of the year than a) why would you change your ways for one day and b) it’s still just fake.

The one good thing about Valentine’s Day though - flowers are particulary cheap to buy on February 15!

  9.

Yeah, but it’s a bit gay for a guy to buy himself flowers… ;-)

And yeah, it is still fake, but for some guys it’s all they can manage. Thankfully i’m not one of them. :-D

  10.

So what are your respective plans then for this Saint Valentines day my lovely ladies? I believe my lady and I are going to go and partake of an outing to the cinema either proceeding or preceeding an evening meal… :-)

  11.

    Boycotting. It takes all day!

  12.

Meeting, Assessment, Kindergarten Autism. In that order. Other than that I’ll boycott as well.

Michele, we should make a Spoon Date tomorrow evening.

  13.

    Oooh, you spoon together?? :-D

  14.

Natty is my favourite person to spoon with!

  15.

I wish my partner would do something fun for me on V-Day.

  16.

Aren’t I supposed to be the girl?

  17.

I took my girl out tonight and showed her a good time… i paid for everything (well, to recharge to Deloitte of course), held her cab door open, got her jacket for her… the usual gentlemanly things that people seem to forget about these days.

A good night, we went to this nice restaurant where there were only 3 sets of diners so we didn’t even have to talk over other people to hear ourselves… hehe :-p

  18.

Mark did you do it? Any SEXy times?

  19.

Nay. Nay this year, at least.

    Where’s my bottle of Maker’s Mark…

  20.

    wow you people are pessimistic…

  21.

but i boycotted as well. That’s easy to do when you are single! (although I did cave and respond to one of the messages I received, but that’s still boycotting!)

  22.

Markey, I’m pretty sure Carey’s fiance would consider her HIS girl :-) hehe

  23.

Hah, she wasn’t last night… The people at the restaurant thought we were a very cute couple. hehe

And to answer your question Matthew, I was a gentleman last night… :-)

  24.

And of course that was the only reason why nothing happened… yeaaahhhh…

  25.

    Let’s stick with that!

PS. My BP class this morning were extremely surprised that I didn’t do something Valentine’s themed! Apparently I have a reputation of whoring myself out for holidays! I don’t know why …

  26.

    umm… because you’re a wh… crazy person?

i’m going with the healthier lunch option today with my fresh sushi and juice combo. yumyumyum

  27.

I find it funny that you send lunch updates and I’m always so confused as to how you already know what you’re about to eat. That whole time zone thing stumps me every time!

  28.

    I got bitten…..again

  29.

Does it work the same with dogs? If you get bitten, can you get a court order to have them put down?

  30.

By Van? Did you have to get a tetanus shot again?

  31.

Ouch. Where did you get bitten?

  32.

Nope, not Van. Aaron this time. He got me on my shoulder. No skin break but hurt like a b@tch! Spent 3 hours at the clinic to be given ibuprofen and an ice pack. I didn’t want to go to clinic but the Special Ed nurse made me.

  33.

So you go to the clinic, and probably catch another freakin’ cold or virus or something stupid! A lot of point in that one, huh?

  34.

Off to try and hide from the masses ladies and gents… enjoy the spooning michele and nat, oh, and send me some of the pics from my stay, i need something to help keep me going here!
